Standing on this foundation, the coach's responsibility is to discover, clarify, and align with what the client wants to achieve; encourage client self-discover; elicit client generated solutions and strategies and hold the client responsible and accountable. 

Professional coaches provide an ongoing partnership designed to help clients produce fulfilling results in their personal and professional lives. Coaches help people improve their performances and enhance the quality of their lives.

Coaches are trained to listen, to observe and to customize their approach to individual client needs. They seek to elicit solutions and strategies from the client; they believe the client is naturally creative and resourceful. The coach's job is to provide support to enhance the skills, resources, and creativity that the client already has.

About Coaching

What does it cost to hire a coach?
Most coaches working with individuals charge about $200 to $600 per month for two hours of coaching. Executive coaches charge more and some clients work with a coach for an hour or two a week. It all works about to about $100 to $300 per hour. Corporate coaching is more, often running to $1,000 to $10,000 per month.

How long must I commit if I start working with a coach?
Most coaches ask for a three to six month commitment. It is important to find out what a particular coach's policies are before you enter into a coaching relationship, and have a signed Agreement for coaching.

Can I hire a coach just for a short-term, special project?
Yes. Some clients hire a coach to help them accomplish specific goals or projects. Sometimes, the client continues working with a coach beyond that as additional goals often become evident. As always, it is the clients’ choice.

What about people who are already doing great in their lives, why would they need a coach?
Coaching is not necessarily about need. It is about creating the most fulfilling and satisfying life you can. Coaches work with people who expect more in some areas of their lives.

Please, give me some context about coaching…
A personal coach does just what an athletic coach or music teacher does, only in a more complete and bigger way. A coach challenges you and takes the time to find out what winning in life means to you. A coach is your partner in living the life you know you can accomplish, personally and professionally. A coach is someone to hold you accountable for your life, to make sure you really do live up to your potential.

No matter where you are in life, there is always a desire for more: more success, more money, closer relationships, a deeper feeling of meaning in life, etc. It is the nature of people to want to attain more, become more, be more, and we all struggle with how to get what we're looking for.

Most people believe that "hard work and doing it on your own" are the keys to finding the life, success, money, or happiness that they seek. They believe that a price must be paid to attain what they want, and often that price is poor health, not having enough time to enjoy life, strained family relationships or lessened productivity. The saddest part is that, even though this effort may result in more of something, it is often not the something you had in mind, and you are back where you started, or worse, further from your real intentions.

Athletes and performers know about this trap. They know they need someone else, a trained individual to help them set goals, discover blind spots, identify real needs, and work effectively toward ultimate goals of excellence. So, they are willing to hire a coach. No serious athlete or musician would expect to progress very far without one.

Why does coaching work?
Coaching works for several reasons:

  • The synergy between the coach and client creates momentum.
  • Better goals are set -- ones that naturally pull the client toward the goal rather than goals that require the client to push themselves to the goal.
  • With the accountability in the coaching relationship the client finds it easier to maintain focus and take consistent action.
  • The client develops new skills, and these skills translate into more success.

Where does the coach focus with an average client?
Coaching is a partnership in which power is granted to the relationship, not the coach. Clients create this synergistic relationship with the coach and select the areas of focus and desired results.

Does the coach work on personal goals or business/professional goals?
Both. We facilitate our clients forward movement by guiding them in setting well designed personal and professional goals that will give them the life they really want. Coaching tools may be applied in any area of life

What happens when I hire a coach?
Many things, but the most important are:

  • You learn about yourself more deeply, what you value, and how you view life.
  • You take more effective and focused actions immediately.
  • You stop putting up with what is dragging you down.
  • You create momentum to get results.
  • You set better goals that you might not identify without a coach.

Who hires a coach and why?
People hire a coach because:

  • They want to clarify and honor their values.
  • They want to get results.
  • They want fulfillment.
  • They want to consciously design and live their lives.

How is coaching different from consulting? Therapy? Sports coaching? A best friend?
Coaching is not consulting. Consulting is directive and content specific. Coaching is about facilitating exploration, expanding awareness, making decisions, taking action and designing environments that support your vision. A coach may use his/her knowledge base to assist in guiding a client, though only if it will serve the client's best interests. When a coach consults or instructs he or she will shift hats to that of a consultant or instructor.

Coaching is not therapy. Coaches don't work on "issues", or get into the past or deal much with understanding human behavior. Coaching is not intended to heal or fix anything. Simply put coaching takes us beyond the places we normally stop when left to ourselves.

Coaching includes several principles from sports coaching, like teamwork, going for the goal, being your best. But unlike sports coaching, most professional coaching is not competition or win-lose based. Coaching strengthens the client's skills vs. helping them beat the other team. It's win-win.

Coaching is not a friendship relationship. A best friend plays a vital role in one's life. Because of the emotional connection with a friend, it is difficult for a friend to be objective and advise you on the most important aspects of your life and/or business. Have a best friend and a coach.

Professional Coaching is an ongoing professional relationship that helps people produce extraordinary results in their lives, careers, businesses or organizations. Through the process of coaching, clients deepen their learning, improve their performance, and enhance their quality of life.

In each meeting, the client chooses the focus of conversation, while the coach listens and contributes observations and questions. This interaction creates clarity and moves the client into action. Coaching accelerates the client's progress by providing greater focus and awareness of choice. Coaching concentrates on where clients are now and what they are willing to do to get where they want to be in the future. ICF member coaches and ICF credentialed coaches recognize that results are a matter of the client's intentions, choices and actions, supported by the coach's efforts and application of the coaching process.
