President's Letter - July 2017

Independence Day is right around the corner. It’s one of my favorite times of the year. I love the celebration, the fireworks and time with my family. The day is inescapably filled with optimism, gratitude and respect.
As I sit here, thinking about the ICF Minnesota coaching community, I realize we all have something in common. Somewhere along life’s path we were introduced to coaching and we embraced it as a way to make the world a better place. Whether you’re coaching one on one, in groups, or in a corporate setting you’re making a difference in our lifetime. Our collective contributions are making an impact. I love hearing about all of the many places coaching shows up.
Take some time this month to reflect on all you do and celebrate. Celebrate all of the energy and time it’s taken you to get to this point. Celebrate all of the opportunities you’ve had to shine a light where others could only see darkness. Celebrate you because you make the world a better place.
On July 25th ICF Minnesota is hosting a picnic to say thank you for all you do. Please consider this your invitation to celebrate with other coaches. Share your stories in a relaxed, open setting. Get to know the coaches in our community that share your passion. Thank you for all you do. I hope to see you there!

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS FOR THE ANNUAL GASTON AWARD
Every year, ICF Minnesota honors one of our own who has made an outstanding contribution to coaching and the coaching community. The award is named after Elaine Gaston, the founder of our local coaching community, then called Minnesota Coaches’ Association (MCA).
Twenty years ago, in 1997, MCA was formed as an organization to inspire, teach and develop the art and science of coaching. It took dedication, wisdom and courage to make this association successful and it is these qualities that the Gaston Award honors in a member of our chapter.
Please review the criteria below, and complete the Gaston Nomination Form on our website at http://www.icfminnesota.org/the-gaston-award for a coach you believe qualifies for this prestigious award. Nominations must be received by me by Friday, July 28th, 2017 to qualify. Send any questions to email@example.com.
Criteria for Gaston Award
The recipient of the Gaston Award must hold a coaching credential (either an ICF-issued credential or certification from an ICF-accredited coaching school or certification from a professional coaching program within an accredited educational institution) and must meet the following criteria:
- Demonstrates clear and strong leadership for the advancement of the coaching profession.
- Demonstrates integrity through professionalism and selfless service
- Has been an active member of ICF Minnesota for three or more years and continues to contribute uniquely to ICF Minnesota’s growth.

July 13th Webinar - Building Emotional Intelligence (EQ) Assessments into Your Coaching Practice with Drew Bird, MSC, M.A.

Join Drew Bird in an engaging exploration of the science behind Emotional Intelligence (EQ) and EQ Assessments. We’ll look at the role EQ plays in personal and leadership development, examine the pros/cons to utilizing EQ assessments in your coaching practice, consider new thinking in EQ around influence, resilience and innovation, and identify a simple process for helping your clients build EQ skills and help you build world-class leaders and teams!
Drew Bird, author of The Leader’s Guide to Emotional Intelligence, has been working with emotional intelligence, and emotional intelligence assessments in coaching settings for more than a decade.
He is an EQ Master Trainer and has certified hundreds of coaches, consultants, and HR professionals on how to effectively use the class leading EQ-i 2.0 and EQ360 emotional intelligence assessments in their work.
From hands-on experience in his own practice, helping leaders to understand, explore, and develop their emotional intelligence, Drew brings a practical perspective to his work that is rooted in the day-to-day realities of leading in today’s organizations.
Drew’s engaging practitioner-academic delivery approach enables him to not only explain how these Emotional Intelligence assessments can be used, but why they are the most effective tools available today. In this webinar, we’ll explore how you can use emotional intelligence assessments as a way of working with existing clients, attracting new clients, and expanding your offerings to build world-class leaders.
Drew holds an MSc in Organizational Psychology from the University of London, England, and an MA in Leadership from Royal Roads University in Victoria, Canada. He is currently preparing for Doctoral level work. Drew is a member of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology. In addition to his work with emotional intelligence, he is a Master Certifying Trainer for the Risk Type Compass assessment, and the Pearman Personality Integrator. He is also certified to administer and debrief the The Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test, the Hogan HPI, HDS, and MVPI, the Myers Briggs Type Inventory, and a range of other 360- degree feedback assessments.
July 25th In Person Meeting - ICF Minnesota PICNIC!
Tuesday, July 25th, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.
ICF Minnesota invites you to a picnic! What better way to get to know your fellow coaches than to share a meal and some fun. Bring your friends, family and colleagues because something this fun can’t be missed. We’ll have great conversations and opportunities to connect over lawn games and picnic food in a beautiful setting. Be prepared to share some coaching stories and get to know your coaching community in this relaxed environment.

Booming Business Blueprint: It's not just What you Earn, it's What you Keep

Greetings, Lynn and Robin here with Booming Business Blueprint and Masterful Coaches Community.com. We help you to reach your goals for a booming business and a balanced life. In our last article we talked about profit strategies to meet financial goals. In this article, we look at managing business expenses to improve your profits.
IT’S NOT JUST WHAT YOU EARN, IT’S WHAT YOU KEEP
Managing business expenses efficiently will help you protect your profit margin. Do you operate lean and mean or do you click and spend fairly easily? Finding the right balance between new investments and frugal decision-making can help you avoid missing out on opportunities or wasting dollars that can be used in better ways.
Here are a few questions to consider:
Is what you want to spend money on a need or a want?
Maybe you just found an exciting new resource for your business. You might think, isn’t that nice! It’s the latest, greatest new way for coaches to find clients and make more money. At least that’s what the advertisement says. You might think about opting in to a new service, product or event that is appealing. But before you buy, it is wise to consider needs versus wants and the right timing so you can take full advantage of this product or service. Also consider if the purchase will help you move in the direction you want your business to go. Avoiding temptations to buy the newest shiny object for a coaching practice can pay dividends with how much profit you keep in your pocket at the end of the day. Delaying the purchase can also leave you open to investing in something you really need or is even better later on.
Exactly how could the new expenditure add value to your business? Will the service, product or event lead to more ease or enjoyment in business operations? Will it allow you to offer more to your clients as a result? Does it translate to more income? These are all great questions to ask before clicking the buy button. Be realistic about your spending habits and the ways you work through opportunities to weed out the tempting shiny offers versus value-driven investments. Take time to review testimonials, research alternatives, and measure your commitment to really utilize what you are purchasing.
How can you balance the new investment costs by possibly eliminating unnecessary expenditures? Just like you may spring clean your home, you can spring clean your business to free up funds to use in better ways. A good time to make or evaluate a budget is right after tax season when you have a yearly snapshot of money coming in and money going out. However, if you don’t have a budget, anytime is a good time to start one. What do you notice? Look for duplication of services. Find any instances where you still pay for something you don’t really use or need. Take a little time to shop around for newer, better and less expensive alternatives. Then make comparisons and decide if changing makes better sense. Notice if there are certain areas in your business where you don’t want to overspend and set up some future safeguards to avoid doing so. Some of the places to examine are office space rentals, technology, professional development, supplies, postage, subscriptions, advertising, marketing, and support services.
• List which expenses are negotiable and non-negotiable in your business.
• Write out ways to evaluate and avoid tempting expenditures for your business before making them.
• Identify the objectives for a purchase before you buy.
• Note how you will measure return on investments (ROI) with the business expenditures you make.
• Schedule when you will take these actions.
• Arrange what will help you to be successful.
In summary, we’ve suggested some ways to keep more money in your pocket with your business. Remember it’s not just what you earn, it’s what you keep. You don’t need to do it alone.
